Abstract

Camel trypanosomiasis is widely distributed in Tunisia and among the major constraint to camel production, causing serious economic losses. The disease control and management required knowledge about its impact on animal health. Hence, blood samples were collected from 221 Tunisian dromedary camels to study the impact of natural Trypanosoma evansi infection on animal health through biochemical investigations. Serological test was used to confirm the infection and 23 biochemical parameters including energetic parameters, nitrogen and protein parameters, enzymes, mineral, electrolytes and trace elements, were analysed in infected and noninfected camels. The results showed that T. evansi infection, which is highly prevalent in Tunisian dromedary camels, induces severe biochemical disorders such as liver dysfunction (decreased urea and total protein), hydro-electrolytic and acidobasic disorders (hypocalcaemia, hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia). On the basis of these findings, biochemical parameters, markedly affected during T. evansi infection, are good biomarkers for health monitoring and management of the disease in camel livestock.
