Abstract

Nature Computational Science, Published online: 15 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s43588-026-01014-9 We present DIPPER (distance-based phylogenetic placer), a graphics processing unit-accelerated computational tool for reconstruction of evolutionary trees from genome sequences. By combining a divide-and-conquer strategy with highly parallel, memory-efficient distance computation, DIPPER scales to ten million sequences (1–2 orders of magnitude beyond the limits of existing tools) while improving both speed and memory efficiency.
