The increasing use of social media has changed the communication practices of society at large. Particularly, the mediatisation processes enabled by the affordances of social media have a significant impact in two salient and related social spheres: news production and political engagement. Scholars have achieved a general consensus regarding the emotional forms of communication that are fostered by the affordances of social media. However, there is an ongoing debate regarding the positive or negative effects they may have on journalism and civic and political engagement. This paper discusses multiple arguments on how the meaning-making processes facilitated by social media have resulted in widespread forms of emotional communication and self-expression. In particular, the implications this mediatisation process has on journalism and political engagement broadly.
