We show that the stability constant of the Lennard-Jones potential in\n mathbb R3, \Φ(x)=\‖ x \‖-12-2 \‖ x \‖-6, is\nsmaller than 14.316. This is remarkably smaller than the best previously\nknown bound. Our method is probably applicable to other similar potentials such\nas the Morse potentials. We also improve slightly, in the Lennard-Jones case,\nthe lower bound for the minimum interparticle distance of an optimal\nn-particle configuration to 0.684.\n
