Abstract

The author proposes that planners develop mechanical ventilation systems to maintain stairs and other emergency building exits smoke-free during a fire. To this end, a number of ancillary measures would be necessary. The author studies the use of the chimney effect to control smoke in the immediate vicinity of a fire. Other factors, such as wind and the chimney effect created by the heating of the building, could prevent the desired outcome. The article describes methods of surmounting these difficulties.
