Abstract

Referring to two international Conferences which took place in 1982, new research results are reported which have failed to reveal any other effects injurious to health beyond the weh known irritant effects on skin and mucous membranes. The presumption that artifical mineral fibres have a carcinogenic potential arises from animal tests, the admissibility of which as evidence was assessed in the dangerous substances ordinance and EEG guide hnes of 15 october 1979. Among these criteria epidemiological criteria occupy the first place; followed by particular types of animal experiments, to which experiments with intraperitoneal application do not corresspond. Animal experiments in which the natural defence system of the organism is kept in function as it is the case for entry through the respiratory tract, the digestive system or through the skin, no critical findings could be found with regard to preventive medicine. Special weight should be given to the results of epidemiological investigations. Although in many available studies essential view points of the circumstances of exposure and the selection of the control group are not taken into account, they provide no evidence of a definitive risk of the creation or aggravation of malignant or non-malignant illnesses of the broncho-pulmonary system as a results of exposure to man-made mineral fibres. Finally the results of in vitro studies of the chemical durability of artificial mineral fibres are considered together with techniques for measuring, exposure and emission relations.
