In many strata that bear marine invertebrate fossils, most cephalopod remains are incomplete. Commonly, the body chamber and/or parts of the phragmocone are missing for various reasons. Here, we document occurrences of various cephalopods from the Devonian to the Cretaceous, where isolated septa or chamber fillings have been (re-)deposited. In many cases, fragmenting is linked with resedimentation and reelaboration. Some of the fossils we portray are in a secondary Lagerstätte of sometimes much younger age or have been disarticulated recently. We show examples and discuss and differentiate between taphonomic as well as sedimentological and palaeobiological processes.
