More than a decade after the launch of the agroecological transition in France, under the Presidency of F. Hollande, what can we observe in terms of institutional innovations (infused by political-administrative actors) or organizational (launched by actors from civil society, whether they are ordinary citizens, agricultural or environmental activists)? The comparison between two contexts for putting on the agenda, more or less displayed, agroecological projects in the Hérault district suggests a certain vitality of local initiatives marked however by converging obstacles and levers : the persistence of a semantic blur around agroecology, a notion that still seems to be for experts or political actors only; the arrival of “neo-rural” people which has increased the social demand for agroecology; the gradual disengagement of the State and the European Union from agroecology perceived more as a binding niche than as a vector, as S. Le Foll supposed, of generalised optimisation of agro-ecosystems.
