Abstract

The contaminants to which the consumers are exposed are in fact complex mixtures of chemicals. Assessment of cumulative risks to humans resulting from simultaneous or sequential exposure to multiple chemicals from different sources via multiple routes is inadequately taking into account by competent authorities. Regulatory toxicity assessment of such mixtures (when the chemicals are known and the corresponding toxicity data are available) is mainly based on safety assessments of individual ingredients, or on whole mixture testing. Several INRA teams, mainly of them in Toulouse, are currently testing mixtures of chemicals on in vitro and in vivo systems. They have developed original tools / approaches for the characterization of additive, supra-additive or infra-additive effects chemicals in mixtures, but also for a better knowledge of human exposure to complex mixtures.
