Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) is a sorptive-based sample preparation technique that efficiently extracts and enriches organic compounds. Since its introduction in 1999, SBSE has gained widespread application across various analytical fields, with significant advancements in environmental analysis. The study employed a systematic review based on the PRISMA guideline, following a well-defined protocol to examine the evolution of SBSE with a particular emphasis on its environmental applications. The databases used were Science Direct and Scopus, where 5342 articles were identified with the keywords used. Following the systematic review stages (planning, identification, selection, and data extraction) a total of 41 studies focusing on the integration of SBSE with gas chromatography were identified, considering the time frame from 2014 to 2024. The main applications identified included water, soil, and air samples. The review showed that SBSE is considered a green analytical technique and thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) is the most used with SBSE for environmental analysis. These results highlighted the technique with green chemistry principles, offering an ecofriendly alternative to traditional sample preparation methods by reducing solvents, minimizing waste, and enhancing sustainability in analytical workflows.
