Abstract

Multimedia applications are ubiquitous in our daily lives. There are some problems and challenges in multimedia applications, like fake news, misleading multimedia content, content security, and copyright management. Blockchain has been a promising solution to address these challenges. However, there is a conflict between the immutability of blockchain and redaction requirements in media application scenarios. In the paper, we propose a trusted multimedia scheme with redactable blockchain (TMRB), which combines redactable blockchain, consortium blockchain, and hybrid storage scheme. With blockchain, integrity and reliability of information stored on TMRB can be guaranteed. Hybrid storage scheme in TMRB can resolve storage challenges of blockchain. Specific redaction policies for media applications are proposed to meet requirements for media scenarios. Experiments show that extra costs introduced in TMRB by trapdoor key reconstruction accounts only 20% of time used by PBFT under 64 consensus nodes with 21 faulty nodes, which is acceptable. TMRB is the first to apply redactable blockchain in media application scenarios, which can provide consumers with a trusted multimedia platform, improve trust, foster a trusted multimedia ecosystem, and provide new use cases for Web 3.0. Consumers can benefit from TMRB, which can also be extended to other multimedia related applications.
