Abstract

On 22 February 1896, a Russian expatriate, P. A. Dementev, appealed to P. L. Lavrov to support Russian emigres in London in their effort to create an all-party newspaper.1 The Londoners' plans for such a newspaper had been disrupted by the death of S. M. StepniakKravchinskii on 23 December 1895, and now they were in search of a new editor for the enterprise. Dement'ev decided to urge Lavrov to endorse the concept of a political journal open to liberal constitutionalists and socialists alike, and he boldly suggested that Lavrov might want to serve as the editor.
