SUMMARY Hawthorn is a common reservoir of the fireblight pathogen in England and Denmark. As in other hosts, the pathogen may overwinter in infected shoots, twigs and branches. Symptoms of canker, shoot and blossom infections are similar to those described for pear and apple. Eradication of fireblight in hawthorn is not a practical possibility in either country and alternative means for containing the disease are discussed.
