Until now the rich technological literature of the 18th century has been little used as a source of historical technical research. Consequently, although there is a rich network of individual technical developments concerning machines, installations, processes etc., concrete conclusions concerning the developments proceeding from them can scarcely be drawn, let alone quantified. How far there is scope for additional knowledge from the technical literature is demonstrated by considering developments in melting furnace technology in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The main concern of this paper is the improvement in output of glass melting furnaces, the technical levels achieved and Information about furnace technology for the different types of glass production.
