Abstract

HE members of the genus Akysis Bleeker are diminutive catfishes which are known to inhabit freshwater streams in Burma, Thailand, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Seven species have been described, A. variegatus (Bleeker, 1846), A. macronemus Bleeker (1860), A. pictus Gunther (1883), A. armatus Vaillant (1902), A. leucorhynchus Fowler (1934), A. maculippinis Fowler (1934), and A. prashadi Hora (1936), of which variegatus, pictus, maculippinis, and prashadi are still known from only the type specimens while additional specimens of the other three have each been reported only once (Smith, 1945) since they were first described.
