Livestock farming is currently facing multiple debates questioning farmers’ practices, the way they treat animals and solutions to improve their welfare. Considering these debates as a controversy helps understanding how the existence of different way to perceive livestock farming and domestic animals among the French society leads to changes of reglementary, professional and cultural norms. Based on the results of different sociological studies on the perception of livestock farming by society, this paper shows the dynamics of the controversy and mechanism of change. The analysis of a case study of mobilisation against caged produced eggs illustrates actors’ strategies to gain public adhesion and to impulse the changes they fight for. More generally, the opening of a space of debate through the controversy allows the co-construction of a collective sense for livestock farming, food, and humananimals relationships.
