Abstract

We propose a method to evaluate the environmental impact of production choices, through modelling farmer behaviour given the underlying economic context. The supply model presented here takes market prices and compensatory payments as given, and derives optimal solutions of land and cropping practices (fertiliser use) from the usual condition of profit maximisation over all components of the cropping system. A particular aspect of the economic model lies in the simplified treatment of land-use dynamics within the cropping system. The objective is to evaluate the impact of output and input prices, and compensatory payments on the environment, by focusing on the single issue of nitrogen leaching. The economic model output variables (land per crop, nitrogen fertiliser) are coupled to an environmental simulator which is calibrated on three French regions to produce an estimate of nitrogen leaching. The relative impact of production and inputs prices, and CAP compensatory payments before the 2006 reform, on the degree of nitrogen leaching, can be easily computed. Our approach can naturally be extended to other environmental issues, such as greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
