Host plant resistance made it possible to reduce impact of virus diseases in numerous crops. Host plant resistance can either directly target viruses or target their vectors, mainly aphids. In this study, we showed that the melon resistance to the aphid Aphis gossypii reduces incidence of two viruses, CABYV, transmitted on a persistent mode, and CMV, transmitted on a non-persistent mode. Next, we investigated using mathematical modeling the potential of jointly deploying resistance to aphids and to viruses to enhance control of viral epidemics. Various agro-ecological systems were considered, mimicking the situation of melon crops in South-East of France. If the benefits of such a deployment are highly probable in the case of CABYV, they remain largely uncertain (but in no case negative) for the control of CMV.
