Abstract

Integrated Weed Management (IWM) is based on the combination of management techniques aiming at reducing the potential for weed infestations during crop cycles, in order to reduce the use of herbicide. This paper presents a long term experiment conducted to assess the performances of cropping system prototypes designed according to IWM principles. The main decision rules are presented, along with their connexions with the available knowledge about weed biology. The results from the first six years show that IWM make it possible to control weeds with a low reliance on herbicides and reduced associated environmental impacts. Socio-economic aspects of modifying cropping systems toward IWM are also discussed.
