Abstract

Phenology is the science of observing the response of plants and animals to changes in the weather and climate. Gilbert White, William Markwick and Robert Marsham pioneered this field of study 200 years ago. This article looks at their work, at recent analysis of their observations and at new, present‐day work on phenology.
